Surprise!

Well, it's only been six months since I wrote you something! So, do not be so impatient. Well, obviously a lot has happened in that time. Or, if you will, not happened. For example, I still do not have a job. I am not so happy about that, but then again, I am very relaxed and feeling healthier than I have in years. So...that is good!

As for happening...I am moving at the end of the month. The place I was in was too big and too expensive for someone that isn't working. I knew that when I moved in, but I never expected it would be so difficult to find work again. Anyway, I am 99% sure that I am moving down to Zushi. I've looked at a couple places in Tokyo, but I do not really want to pay another cent in key money...or rent, for that matter.

The downside is I will miss being in Tokyo and living more than an hour away by train kind of limits my ability for spontaneous fun up there. And, of course, it is much harder to get back to Zushi after a night out. Another surprisingly sad thing is having to get rid of all my furniture!! Maybe I will put it in storage. In any case, I think I am ready to try it out.

50,000 visitors

Hey! There have now been 50,000 visitors to Sarukoen! Thank you everyone for continuing to come back to visit.

Actually, this has been in the back of my mind for the last few months and sometimes, when I was really REALLY bored, I would think of ways to celebrate. Of course, I am lazy, so I never got past the random musings stage. Whoops.

Thanks again!

Happy birthday to me (well, my blog)

So, I have been writing a blog for two years now. Actually, it was two years at the end of April, but I did not add a counter until 14 May 2005, so let's just say it is today.

Usually, something along the lines of greatest entries or pictures would be in order, but I don't have time to go back through everything today. I had a ton of homework for school and I am working on something else that has me running around.

Anyway, thank you for reading this and for being patient with my laziness. I am not going to make any promises about how often I plan to keep it up. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I love that phrase.

20,000 visits! Thank you!!!

I just noticed that the blog counter at the bottom of the page has ticked over 20,000. Wow - not bad for thirteen months.

As always, thank you for visiting and please keep coming back!

Hey, its my one year anniversary!

sarukoen.com is one-year old today!

I marked the anniversary by paying up for another year of hosting services.

Earlier this month, I was pretty excited about the milestone, but today has come and gone and no one brought any presents or cake. I suppose I should have been more vocal about it like I am when it is my own birthday.

I thought about doing a "best of sarukoen" post, with links to the posts that I liked the most, but I could not be bothered to go back and pick any. And if you read this blog, you have already seen them anyway.

Thanks for stopping by...please keep coming back!

15,000 visits - thanks for coming

It might be kind of silly to mark milestones like this when some people get 1,000s of hits a day. BUT...this is my blog and I can if I want to. Thanks for visiting!

More updating...I am finished now

Hmmm...I need to think of better ways to spend Sunday night. I wasn't satisfied with how things looked, so I decided to keep working on it. The major difference is the sidebar...I got rid of the picture icons for the photo album. There is a way to drop random pictures from your photo page into the blog - I just do not know how to do it yet.

I also re-organised the links so that they make more sense. And added cartoon icons to pretty things up. I am quite happy with how it looks now. If those that are interested, the icons come from Leo's Icon Archive and most can be downloaded free for non-commercial purposes. Very cool.

Re-working the site

A NEW LOOK!
If you are a regular visitor, then you probably notice some changes to this site. I have switched the colours around and updated the font and text styles. I think I will add a second sidebar on the left, but that was too much effort for me on a Sunday morning.

I am not sure if the banner picture works well with the new colour scheme...what do you think? It would be a shame to lose the monkeys after such a short period of time. Let's see how I feel over the next few days.

AND MY BLOGGING ANNIVERSARY IS COMING UP
On 29 April, this blog will be one year old. I have been lazy about updating it over the last few months, but I am still posting somewhat regularly. Has it really been a year? Amazing!

Wow! 10,000 visits and counting

As of last night, there have been 10,000 visits to this sight. Thank you very much! Traffic has really accelerated over the last few months, mostly because of Google.

Meanwhile, I have been pretty lazy about providing updates. I will do better from now on.

Thank you for stopping by.

Google image search

Recently, the number of hits on this site has accelerated. What is surprising is that the number of entries I make has been decelerating. About 30% of all visitors are coming from Google's image search.

It seems that I am getting more credit for pictures of Zurich, London, and Mozart's house than anything I have been writing.

Google has re-worked the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" for the Internet age. Good thing I will be in Korea next weekend. With my camera.

Almost back on track

Whew! I have learned a few things this weekend, the most important being that all those nagging messages to back-up your files should not be ignored. In hindsight, there is probably not much I could have done about the previous computer...it took a lot of abuse and has been all over the world multiple times...I should have replaced it sooner.

Anyway, absent all the pictures (I am SO GLAD I uploaded the ones I liked from Hokkaido and France onto this site), there was not too much that I will miss. Let's see what I will say about that in a few weeks. And I can use this as an opportunity to better organise myself. How is that for optimistic?

I also spent most of the weekend getting myself sorted out again. Between a visit to the IT guys, computer shopping and setting the new laptop up, I used up two days (and I am still not done). I feel like I need a day off now!

Happy anniversary

I have been doing this for six months now! Actually it is six months and one day, but I had completely forgot about it yesterday - which I tend to do. I know some people link to their favourite or more popular posts, but nothing springs to mind at the moment so maybe I will do that after one year. Well, the entry about Preyash trying to board a plane with his baby's passport does - but I promised I wouldn't name him, so I won't link to that.

Thank you to everyone who has stopped by and made this part of their Internet life. I hope in the next six months I can improve on things - it should not be too difficult as Kaz tells me I am still not funny or interesting.

Speaking of anniversaries, I should get to the real topic of this post. Because six months pales in comparison to the 37 years that my sister Sandy and her husband Roger have been married. They celebrated that happy day on Thursday (yep, I missed that one too, but only by two days). Happy anniversary!

4,000 now...

Well almost...it is four away, but I am at work and will soon be too busy to play around with this anymore.

Thanks to everyone for reading and please keep coming back. I think it is almost time to hide that thing. I used to like watching it, but it is getting kind of boring now.

New banner, until something better comes along

I took this at Kamuiwakka Falls in Hokkaido two months ago. I have no idea who the woman is...she just happens to be there. This is the hot water pool at the top of the falls.

Yoko said I should change the picture to something more Fall-like. This was the best I could do on short notice. I hope to get a nice picture with lots of leaves changing colors, but this will have to do in the meantime.

Blog power 2: blogs a Japanese consumer favourite

I couldn't let this article slip by unnoticed. A Dentsu (Japan's largest ad agency) survey shows that blogs were the most popular consumer item selected in the first half of 2005.

More popular than Star Wars 6 (or is it 3?)
More popular than flat-screen TVs
More popular than electronically-automated houses

Hmmm...maybe this is not such big news after all. A few weeks ago, I read that the number of blogs globally had doubled in the last six months, although the number of consistently-updated blogs had not changed very much.

So, a lot of people sign up with good intentions and than let it go after awhile. That makes blogs sound like dieting or quitting smoking. Considering I should lose a few pounds and/or cut out the cigarettes, it makes me wonder how I have been able to keep this up.

Thanks!

Today, the little traffic counter hit 1,000 (as i type it is at 1,005 and counting)! The overall number is higher because I did not put it on until two weeks after I started, but this is a benchmark all the same. So, thanks for reading and I hope I can keep you entertained going forward.

I have been tinkering...too hot to do anything else

Well, that wonderful 19 degree weather last week is already a distant memory and we probably won't see anything like that again for awhile. It is 29 degrees now (84F) and supposedly feels like 33 (92F) thanks to the humidity. Arrrggghhhh.

Anyway, I have been making a few changes to the site today, both minor (font changes) to major (new sidebar sections). I have added a feature that lists the recent comments posted by you at the bottom of the sidebar. If you do not like it, let me know.

Also, I added a section called "my gurus" with a link to the extremely helpful Learning Movable Type pages. They have figured out how to get more out of MT and also explain it well enough that a computer misfit like myself can understand it. If you are new to MT and trying to figure out how to improve things they are highly recommended.

UPDATE: Check that out!!! I was able to get a background picture to replace the boring red color I had before. Not sure if this is the one I will use permanently, but it will do for now!

UPDATE #2: I have also expanded the size of the actual blog...it is much wider now. To make it look better I also pushed up the font sizes. My only concern is that some computers will not be able to support the width...let me know. It will probably be hot again tomorrow, so I can change it back.

Upgrade in the works

I have been meaning to update the style template for this blog, but I keep finding other things to do (like reading other people's blogs to come up with ideas). But that does not mean I have not been busy making improvements.

Today, I went shopping for a new digital camera. The one I have now has proven to be good, but it is only four megapixels, while the newest ones are five. Of course, the real question is whether I need to have that extra megapixel of resolution. And to be honest, I really don't.

But I did need the 2.5inch display and a smaller size, so I bought it anyway. I also bought a carrying case and a memory card. I most have been feeling extravagant!

Blog power...works in Korea

The always-interesting Japundit site has posted this entry on a woman in Korea who refused to clean up after her dog on the subway. There are a few things that are shocking about this.

* First, that it happened. Can you imagine being in that situation?
* Second, that they managed to identify her from pictures taken by a fellow commuter.
* Third, that people are getting worked up over it.

The Japundit correspondent was the most level-headed: 'you be the judge'. As for me, I judge it good enough to write about on this site. The comments from the blog they link too are pretty entertaining. My favorite: "you're all idiots"

I thought I was special

I am behind the times. When I set this blog up, I thought I was on the cutting edge...doing something different. But today, I read that there are now over THREE MILLION bloggers in Japan. That means one out of every 40 people here have their own web site. And that number is expected to double in the next two years! So, I am not special...I am late!

It also means that Kaz's comments earlier this week are right...I am going to have to be funny...there is too much competition.

If I needed any proof, the article also reports that 16.5 million people in Japan read blogs. Considering my new visitor counter (>>>>) says there have been 39 this week, I am not doing so well in comparison. Might have to take that down. Then again, when I installed it, I had the option of setting the first number, so I could have put "100" or "1,000" and made it look like this was a popular site. Maybe I could go back and put "16.5 million"...I could pretend everyone in Japan is reading this.

From tomorrow, I should have plenty of entertaining things for you to see and read. I will fly to London for the weekend and then I am off to Europe for holiday. Stay tuned...
